Coming soon: Goplan on the iPhone and iPad

One of the top requested features that ends up in our inbox is not really a “feature”, but a new product. Many of you have been asking for a Goplan iPhone (and now iPad) application, and while our answers to those requests have been scarce in details, we’ve been hinting at the fact that we’ve been working on it. It’s time to go public, however - Goplan for the iPhone is coming soon. Read below for a quick Q&A with details.

It took you a while to officially announce this. Why?
We’re not a huge team behind Goplan - and that usually means we have to make real good use of our time. So we tend to focus on the things that people care for the most, and on figuring out the right balance between improving what we have today, and working on new functionality for tomorrow. The iPhone app - which is something we need ourselves too, as iPhone users - has been on our plans for a long time now, but it’s been hard to find the right time to work on it - until now.

When is it coming out?
No specific date yet. We’ve implemented a few things already, but we’re not ready to commit to a specific schedule at this point. Maybe in about one month and a half. Definitely not a lot more or a lot less than that. We’ll keep you guys posted through the blog and our twitter account. Keep in mind we want this out there as badly as you do :-)

iPad too?
We’re planning on supporting the iPad. Ever since the product was announced, we thought it would be the perfect tool for managers and people who don’t want to carry a computer to manage their projects. There might not be an iPad-specific version by day one, but we’re very interested in having an iPad-tailored experience for users on bigger screens.

How much will it cost?
Zero. We’re making the application free for people who have a paid Goplan subscription. We wouldn’t like to pay for a service twice, so we’re not making you pay twice either.

I have more questions - who do I ask?
Ask us anything in the comments. Ever since Goplan launched (it’s been a while!) we’ve been striving to include your feedback in all our feature planning, and this is no exception. We would love to hear your ideas, questions and concerns. You guys are the reason why we keep improving the product (thank you!), and we want to do the same for the iPhone app. So shoot! Ask us anything about the app - we’ll do our best to answer your feedback.

Nice! Excited to see the app roll out in a few months.

Glad to hear it… now what about android? :)

Android is a platform we would absolutely LOVE to support, but can’t dedicate resources to at least for the time being. Our API being open, we’re definitely willing to support anyone who sets to build an Android app for Goplan. Once the iPhone app rolls out we may work on it ourselves, but we can’t make any promises for now - sorry!

So this is going to be a native application and not a web application, right?

That’s exactly right. We want it snappy and responsive, and that means native.

2nd android ;)

Another for Android here, or at least a mobile web version to be used on Android devices.

Im happy to hear your announcement… love GoPlan

+one for android :)

and regarding developing an app that uses your api: it would be a good start if you could publish a short article about the basics of your api (maybe combined with a small sample)…
this could help to come up with an air-app for android and android-based tablets ;)

just my 2cents!

Can’t wait for the iPhone app!

Excited for this application. Just signed up for GoPlan and love it. Getting my first iPhone next month when iPhone 4 comes out in Canada!

Very interested to here an update on this. We are active GoPlan users, but desperately need an iPhone app to manage our work.

Android please :)

Hi, perhaps it’s because I just stuck my head out in the sun and fried something inside but why a native app? A mobile html5 application (with offline support) would most probably do the trick, kill 3 birds with one stone (iphone, ipad and android), the maintenance release cycle would be unbelievably shorter and, given your awesome web expertise, we’d probably have it in our hands already :-)

Hey, do you have news about the iPhone app? The app it’s great!!!

I’ve refrained from doing this for a long time…

On April 6th, 2010 you said “Maybe in about one month and a half. Definitely not a lot more or a lot less than that.”

So, 6 weeks would have meant about May 18th… give or take some… double that would have been June 29th… It’s now been 2.5 times as long as you suggested it might be.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m really not complaining about the app not being out yet… I’d just really like is an update on it’s progress…. you know something like “We’ll be submitting it to Apple next week and are hoping to have it approved the following week”… or “We ran into problems and it’s going to be another 6 weeks”… or whatever… but please tell us SOMETHING!

I’m evaluating cloud project management services. Both iPad and iPhone apps are key factors in choosing a project space. Looking forward to a release.

One for Android :)

One more for Android.

Agree with Jon - any kind of progress would be useful.

In the boat of evaluating services (basecamp etc) and having ipad/iphone integration even in the works is important to me.

Don’t mind hearing that it’s been delayed because of XYZ, just knowing *something* would be nice.

Yes, an update would make my decision easier :)

What’s the status of this? We really require an iPhone as members of our team are away interstate frequently with access only via iPhone.

Can we have a status update?

Also holding off until iphone/ipad. Even a ballpark release date would be appreciated - thanks

hey guys,
it’s a very elementary marketing law that it’s 10 times better to communicate (part of) the truth than allowing the outside world to create fantasy reasons why you are not delivering the iOS app.

Could you please update something on the iphone app? You don’t know how appreciated that would be to be able to work mobile instead of being chained to the desktop

please please please updates?

would be great to be able to just use iphone/ipad to meetings instead of big laptop or loose ideas on paper..

thanks!

Is there really NO update on this? It’s been over a year and still nothing. Pretty annoying.

tic….tac…..

I think you meant tick tock….

Seriously? I can’t believe my comment was JULY 2010?!?

A month without an update is poor… 6 months without a response is inexcusable.

I gave up on GoPlan 6 months ago, but a friend was asking about alternatives to BaseCamp and I thought I’d check to see if GoPlan was even still in business when I remembered the iPhone app…

[...] who’ve been with us for a while know that we’ve been working on an iPhone application for Goplan. They also know it never launched - a cause for some dispair and disappointment, [...]

Hey guys,

I just posted an update regarding the iPhone app which you can read by clicking here. As a team we decided that it made more sense to focus on the main web application experience and start thinking about a way to create a mobile app for goplan that would work on any platform.

There are more details on the new blog post, but we believe that a reaffirmed focus on the main experience is better for everyone. We want to nail online project management, and that’s what we’ll be focusing our time and attention on.

I know these are not great news for those of you who’ve been waiting for this, but these news are definitely for the best. I hope you understand. We’ll obviously support any developer who decides to take it upon themselves to build an iOS app for Goplan, and would be happy to strike a deal with them too, even.

Fred
